Who Are We?

How can we help?

Manchester Rape Crisis is a confidential support service run by women for women and girls who have been raped or sexually abused.

MRC has been a registered charity since 1979 and is a member of the UK's Rape Crisis Federation.

Without the enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers, we would not have been able to achieve as much as we have, so they need to be applauded. MRC is a small but vital local charity which is hoping to continue growing in order for us to meet the needs of our clients and to also continue raising awareness of the issues surrounding rape and sexual abuse.

If you have suffered some form of sexual abuse - past or present and are in need of someone to talk to, are worried or frightened, you can call our helpline during our open call times or leave a message on the ansaphone which is available 24 hours a day. Calls cost the normal price of a phone call.

All our volunteers are trained and come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are here to help you when needed.

At present we do not work with male survivors but their calls will be treated sympathetically and we can provide details of other agencies that can help.

Helplines

Our help-lines are staffed by women of differing ages, races, backgrounds and sexual orientation. If you would prefer to speak to someone who you feel may have greater knowledge or experience of issues which you may want to talk about, please do tell us and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
A few volunteers run the help line. Sometimes personal commitments in their lives mean that the help line is not always available at the times set out. If you leave your name and number someone will return your call at the earliest possible convenience.

Aims and Objectives

To end violence in the lives of women by:

  • Supporting women survivors as individuals and in groups and helping these women in regaining greater control in their lives, achieve more freedom of choice and happiness. Providing appropriate, accessible counselling support services to compliment other services available in the community.
  • Providing education and awareness raising around issues of sexual abuse and violence towards women of all ages and backgrounds and their carers in the community who are at risk.
  • Learning from our work and responding to new knowledge and identified needs.
  • Enhancing involvement of all women in the development and management of Manchester Rape Crisis (RASACS) policies and services and thereby improving accountability and best value.
  • Strive towards evolving goals of equality of access and opportunity for all sections of the community, regardless of race, culture, religion, age, ability, sexual orientation or socio-economic class and status.
  • To contribute to the general empowerment of all women via our services.

"Abuse shatters lives, while living in secrecy, as a person you can feel so exposed but also extremely isolated, all pride and dignity is removed whilst you are left trapped in a situation shrouded by lies. I had lost all sense of my being; I had conformed into what my abusers required me to be.
Fortunately, during counselling I was able to build and maintain a relationship, where all discussions were non-judgemental and allowed me to look inside and find myself again...the woman that I wanted to be."
